| Premise: Imagine this: Tomorrow, when you wake up, you are immortal. Not only immortal, but invulnerable. You will never age, you will never get sick, you will never suffer physical harm of any kind, and you will never die. And you have no idea why. Changes things a bit, doesn't it? So now the question is - what do you do? Remember, this is still you we're talking about - with your same family, same friends, same responsibilities, same problems, same life - what do you do? The answer: Whatever you have to. Because as far as you know, you are alone. The only one of your kind. No one else can help you or come close to understanding you. If you felt like an outcast before, you truly are one now. And it will be that way forever. No way out, no way back. Only forward remains. For you, there is always the next day to face. And the next. And the next. And the next. And the next... And somewhere there are two men you have never met watching you. Judging you. Debating you. Believing somehow that within you is the answer to whether humans beings will ever be worth a damn or not. And they don't care what you do. They just want to be there when it happens. So go ahead - dress in black leather and act like a super-hero. Train yourself in swordplay and take revenge on all who once hurt you. Turn your inner demons outward. Or don't. Just go slowly and quietly crazy. Shut yourself in for all eternity. Wander the earth like a pariah. Help people. Kill people. No one can stop you. Do whatever you want. After all, these people walking around today are only flesh and blood. Mortal. Wisps of existence. They will all die. All of them. You're the only one that has to live with yourself. Story: Nine people are chosen, seemingly at random, from different parts of the world to see what they will do with the gift of extra life. Like a cosmic jury system, their actions will ultimately decide the course of humanity. | | |
| Ray Ray was on his deathbed when he received the "Gift". His wife already gone, he had made his peace with mortality and looked forward to seeing her again. However, as he was surrounded by friends and family, death did not come. Doctors were baffled, and his case went down as one of the many unexplainable medical miracles that happen every year. He is now the always-constant patriarch of his growing family — the solid rock for them to lean on. Through all of this he carries two burdens — he must watch his children and grandchildren grow old and die, and he may never see his dear wife again. | | |
| Masuko Born the daughter of a concubine, Masuko (whose name means "my possession") was fated to be trapped in the path of her mother. Her beauty brings her the worst sort of attention from the worst kind of men in the most unbearable of situations — and she carries the scars from that, both inside and out. Rescued from that life only to be forced into one much worse, Masuko now feels a debt of honor to a man whose only goal is power — and who now has an unkillable assassin at his command. | | |
| Kat A Norwegian fashion model, Kat has never really had to struggle for much in her life. She is young and beautiful in a society that prizes that highly. To her, the "Gift" is at first a novelty, then a heavy burden. She just never developed the emotional strength to deal with such a harsh new reality, and the weight of it might crush her if she does not find strength somehow in others. | | |
| Raul Born to an overprotective mother, Raul led a sheltered life in Spain. His future was destined to be no more than to inherit his parents' small bookstore, and his only daily escape was in the adventure books he was always reading. He sees "the Gift" as the greatest thing that ever happened to him and his chance to live out all the heroic fantasies he's ever had about himself. Courageous, brave and resourceful, Raul wants to be a hero — perhaps too much. | | |
| Grace Bestowed with the "Gift" when she was 8, Grace has perhaps the biggest hurdle of all — to be forever condemmed to live in the body of a child. Despite that (or perhaps because of it) she has a remarkable outlook on life. Her ability to see the potential in everything is unique in the group. She is highly intelligent — second, perhaps, only to Anja. The only thing she lacks... is family. | | |
| The Aztec In modern day Mexico still exists a pocket society of Aztecs that continue to live by the old ways, seen as horribly brutal by the outside world, but that have served them well since the days of Cortez. Little is known of "The Aztec", except that legends persisted for years of an unkillable jaguar god. No one has seen his true face, and he seems to have the supernatural ability to change shape and project his thoughts into another's mind. No one knows his motivations or what he will do in any situation. | | |
| Anja Anja is a brilliant Russian scientist. She is also an atheist, a cynic, and obsessed with discovering the root cause of her immortality. By her rationale, unlocking this mystery will be the greatest single scientific accomplishment in human history. There will be no more death, no sickness, no hunger, no pain... Why waste resources trying to cure a disease when you can make everyone immune to everything? Why have wars when neither side can be killed? Limits on man's exploration will be a thing of the past. Mankind would be the strongest species on the planet. Russia its most powerful nation. And she... well... She would be its greatest champion. | | |
| Donovan Born to great wealth and all its advantages, Donovan had the chance to do great things, but chose instead to self-destruct. He is a herion addict who sees life as a series of wrongs done to him, the biggest of which is his new-found invulnerability which prevents him from ever using drugs as an escape again. Instead of marvelling at the miracle of a second chance at life, he sees it as a curse he did not want. His prisons, like so many of ours, are in his own mind — and only he holds the key to his redemption. | | |
| 3G 3G is one of the invisible people who make up the majority of life. We've known him and people like him since elementary school. Good-hearted, but not accepted by the crowd despite their best efforts, these people disappear from our radar without a second thought. No one knows or really cares what happens to them. We assume they go on to carve out some sort of meager existence. Sadly, we are more right than we know. Living alone in a NYC tenement, 3G is known to his neighbors only by his door number. He stuffs envelopes for a living. He owns a phone, but it never rings. He knows he is different, but is afraid people will shun him even more if they knew, so he does nothing with it. His sole involvement with the others is following their exploits in the media. Over time, his fear of the world increases, until it becomes a full-blown phobia of the outside world. Throughout the entire film, we never hear him speak. It is said that any culture can only be truly judged by its weakest member. 3G is an everyman. He is us. | | | | |
